We will be starting a new unit centered on a novel, Homeless Bird, which tells the story of a young girl from India who is forced into an arranged marriage. Since arranged marriage is a new idea for many students, they will be comparing and contrasting two opposing views in our AoWs this week.
Although most homework assignments are due on Friday, your child will have overnight reading assignments throughout the week during this unit.
Our goal in this unit is to not only help your child become a better reader and writer, but to also help him or her become a better thinker. We want him or her to consider multiple points of view, compare and contrast several sources, and evaluate the source of information and the author’s purpose for publishing it. For that reason, in addition to reading the book, we will also be reading a variety of articles, viewing video clips, and analyzing graphs.
Some important dates include:
AoW-- Read the AoW overnight on your own.
Friday: RDW #1: After reading “First Comes Marriage,” what did you find interesting or surprising? Why do Preeti Gulati and Aashish Partuthi feel that arranged marriage is a good idea? Use and highlight the word “consent” and at least four complex sentences. (article attached)
RDW #2: Briefly summarize “First Comes Marriage” and “The Problem With Arranged Marriage”. What is each author’s purpose for writing these articles? What evidence shows that? Include and highlight at least four complex sentences (hint: you have opposing points of view) (article attached)
December 3--First PR book is due.
Have a great week,
Although we would like to students to use their own words and organize their writing independently, the second RDW may be a little difficult, so here are some sentence starters if your child is completely stuck J:
RDW #2 (Brief comments about the idea that the student is going to write about two opposing points of view)

(Begin with TAG for the second article), the author believes ______________________________ because she thinks _____________________________________. In fact, she said, “_______________”, which means ________________________________________.
In conclusion, _______________________
